Welcome to AIRIES
Greetings from OHGAKI Shinichiro, President, Association of International Research Initiatives for Environmental Studies
The environment has been deteriorating at a global scale as problems such as global warming, loss of biodiversity and resource depletion progress. The effects are beginning to be seen on system homeostasis at the global level. Extreme meteorological phenomena occur frequently in all parts of the world, affecting human health and economies. As the IPCC has indicated, there is a high likelihood that this is the result rising levels of greenhouse gas emissions. The Paris Agreement signed at the COP21 conference in December 2015 charts a clear course toward decarbonization. We have reached a stage where a fundamental review of the relationships between humans and the environment should be undertaken.
To put a halt to environmental deterioration, efforts are called for to pinpoint the causes and gain a rigorous understanding of the various phenomena occurring on our planet and, with that overview, to implement countermeasures that respect the precautionary principle and concept of adaptable management. For that reason, collaboration will become increasingly important among different fields of research, between advanced and developing countries, and also between the community of researchers and diverse stakeholders.
The Association of International Research Initiatives for Environmental Studies is addressing these needs. By promoting environmental research and technology development and the exchange of information and international networking among researchers and technicians in industry, government and academia as well as policymakers and a wide range of citizens, our activities contribute to the resolution of these environmental problems.
English-language Academic Journal
Global Environmental Research
Global Environmental Research is an English-language academic journal edited and published by the Association of International Research Initiatives for Environmental Studies (AIRIES). It is published biannually with the purpose of widely disseminating outstanding research on the global environment. In addition to the English-language journal, a Japanese-language journal, Chikyu Kankyo, is also published biannually for distribution within Japan.
The content includes reviews, original papers and commentaries among others. Reviews present research results on selected topics, and commentaries introduce research projects or results presented at meetings. The editorial board selects appropriate writers for reviews, based on the particular content of the issue. Research funded under the Environmental Research Fund of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan, is given priority, but a broad range of other research is also acceptable if it has appropriate content. Submissions of commentaries are welcomed firstly from AIRIES members, but also from researchers in any field of global environmental research. Decisions on publication will be made after reading the manuscripts received.
